Read a Book

Read a Book

I thought now would be an excellent time to share some of the books and authors that I’ve read this past year. If you’re like me, instead of using this at home time to maybe clean out closets, get your tax planner completed, write a blog post, or something actually productive, you are spending your time watching way too many Law & Order reruns, browsing the internet, eating, etc. I could go on with the etc. but I know you get my drift.

I am so thankful we are living in a digital age. I have enough books that I’ve collected over the years from my mom, friends, and gifts that I could probably read for a year but you may not or maybe you just like reading on your device or, like me, you enjoy discovering new authors. We have books at our fingertips. If you are ordering on Amazon you might not get what you order for several weeks but try Barnes-Noble or other online bookstores to see what you can get. If you have a library card I hope you are utilizing the online resources they have through Libby and Hoopla. There are great resources to order ebooks. I subscribe to Bookbub and order digital books from them. The actual Bookbub subscription is free. I’ve even downloaded some great devotionals from them. You can put your preferences in and you will get a daily email suggesting something for you, usually for $1.99 or less. That’s a bargain!

If you haven’t been a reader of mine for very long, missed it, or forgot about it I posted articles titled “Let’s Talk Books” http://www.westtxwoman.com/lets-talk-books/ and “More Books” http://www.westtxwoman.com/more-books/ that both have lists of some books I loved. You can also see my page “Favorite Authors” http://www.westtxwoman.com/favorite-authors/ for more suggestions.

I’m not going to give a review or synopsis of the books I’ve read in the last 6 months. You can look them up online and decide if they are your cup of tea. This is just a list of some I’ve read that I enjoyed:

***The Bible ***

If you need comfort during this time, go to Psalms.

*The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

*Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

The Cactus by Sarah Haywood

The Scandal at Bletchley by Jack Freby

*How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry

The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club by Duncan Whitehead

* Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce

*The First Conspiracy by Bad Meltzer and Josh Mensch

Filthy Rich by James Patterson

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins

*The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict

Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson

Still Life by Louise Penny

I’ve put a * by some of my favorites.

Since we have had some really pretty days recently, I’m eating way too much, and I have an overweight dog I have been walking a lot. Lots of days I listen to a podcast or Pandora but I was looking for something to read from the library the other day and I downloaded 1 of Garrison Kellor’s “Lake Wobegon” books. I highly suggested downloading the audio because he is a master storyteller and I just think it’s better in his own voice. Wisdom, humor, and nostalgia can’t be beat.

My prayer is that you are all healthy, social distancing, and taking care of yourselves emotionally, spiritually, and physically. I believe God is using this time in a mighty way. Thank you for taking time to read my little blog and I hope you find something good to read. If any of you have read something or a new author that you really liked please leave a comment so that I can share.

When my anxious thought multiply within me, Thy consolations delight my soul. Psalm 94:19
